The Testament of Peter the Great

I am acting the role of Dr Paulsen, doctor to Peter the Great, in a made for TV film titled “The Testament of Peter the Great,” directed by Vladimir Bortko. The film looks at the last days of Peter’s life, as he struggles to keep illness at bay, and to fight off the intrigues of his family and courtiers. The film is set to come out in 2011.
Vladimir Bortko is a perfectionist, and that, for me, is the biggest compliment that one can pay to a director. Nothing escapes his eye – lighting, costume, make-up, gesture – and everything has to be exactly right; for this scene here, he brought in an expert just to show us how to bow correctly!
No expense has been spared in the production, and the cast list is a who’s who of some of Russia’s best actors and actresses: Alexander Baluyev, Alexander Filipenko, Sergei Makhovetsky, Mikhail Boyarsky, Liza Boyarskaya… Working with them has been an enormous pleasure.
In this clip we are filming inside the palace of Monplaisir, at Peterhof Palace, outside of St Petersburg. Monplaisir was Peter’s favourite residence, and it shows that he had great taste; no matter that people think he had no eye for beauty.
I’m not so sure about the wig that I’m wearing, but the clothes are nice…!

St Petersburg International Economic Forum 17 - 19 June 2010

I was at the forum to meet on the Friday with film execs about my new screenplay. On the Thursday I was at the Russia-EU Business Dialogue. The forum is a very high powered "talking shop," so I figured that I should talk about something...

Guest historian in St Petersburg, Jeremy Noble

Produced by The Last Word

Here, I am the guest historian for episode 9 of Glamour Puds, presented by the wonderfully talented Eric Lanlard, patissier to the stars. In this second series, Eric is following in the footsteps of Antonin Careme, "The King of Chefs, and the Chef of Kings", who cooked for Talleyrand, the Prince Regent, Tsar Alexander I and Louis XVIII.

We had a lot of fun making this episode called "Careme in Russia;" we were very privileged to be able to film in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, and in the original kitchen at Peterhof Palace. Eric and I had a great time talking about the influence of Careme on Russian cooking, and vice versa. Eric shows his skills as a ‘ship’s cook,’ and also at the five star Kempinski Hotel Moika 22, where he magically produces Careme’s Charlotte Russe and the very Russian version known to every Russian housewife (and househusband) as Charlotka.
