Evgenii (Zhenya) Magomedov is 21 years old. He studied at
one of the best art schools in St Petersburg, he served his
compulsory military service in the President’s Regiment in
the Kremlin in Moscow, and he is studying at what is probably
the best art institute in the city.
These are the facts of his life to date; they do not say
that he has an exceptional artistic talent. They knew about
it in the Kremlin, however, where he was much in demand for
sketching portraits of his fellow soldiers, and, as word got
around, of people much higher up.
It is a glamorous biography, but the work is what matters.
You will have an idea about the scale of his talent if you
look at his landscapes, look at the dates of composition,
and then work out that he was 11 years old.
He describes his ‘mature’ style as 'Photo-realism.' It is
a style so close to photography that you can look very closely
at a sketch and think that it must in fact be a photograph
(or perhaps worked from a photograph) but no, it is all by
his hand.
He can draw from life, and also from a photograph; if you
would like him to draw a portrait for you, please write to
me, and I will put you in touch with him.
